Armed Forces Esports is an official initiative for the Armed Forces Sports program, providing service members with a unique platform to demonstrate their athletic abilities beyond the intramural level, both in team-based and individual sports. It’s a chance for service members to proudly represent their respective branches at higher-level athletic competitions.
The rise of esports has led the military to use video games as a way to build community among their service members, many of whom are already playing their consoles in the barracks. The services are also used to grow interest and expand morale-boosting efforts to a younger generation.
The Armed Forces Sports program was officially established in 1948 as the Inter-service Sports Council. Today, the Armed Forces Sports program is the culmination of each branch of services’ sports and fitness program. Service members participate and compete at unit-level intramurals and advance to the All-Service level. The Armed Forces Sports continues to provide an avenue for military Service members to participate in national and international competitions. The Armed Forces Sports program is a voluntary program for Service members to participate in with their commander’s approval.
