Washington --- Naval Station (NS) Norfolk’s waterfront came alive on October 16, 2025, as 20,000 attendees gathered along the fishing pier for an unforgettable Operation MWR concert. Hosted by Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Entertainment in partnership with NS Norfolk’s MWR, the event marked one of the largest concert turnouts in base history and the second consecutive year Norfolk has hosted an Operation MWR concert.

MWR patrons from across Virginia traveled to experience the show, including those stationed in the Washington, D.C., area. Many made the drive to the Virginia Beach area to be part of the excitement, showcasing the reach and enthusiasm of the Navy MWR community. Not even the weather could dampen the spirit as the crowd sang and danced through the night.

“It was an amazing night. Thank you MWR for putting this together,” said Rishi Chhatpar, an active duty Sailor who attended the concert. “I hope you all continue to push towards this effort to increase morale in our military community! Bravo Zulu!”

From Sailors to spouses, the concert resonated deeply across the Navy community. “I’m incredibly grateful for this experience,” said Jess S., a Navy spouse. “Gwen Stefani threw me back to the days spent listening to ‘Tragic Kingdom’ on repeat, while Jelly Roll spoke to my soul.”

The evening opened with rising artist Hueston, whose soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics set the tone for the night. Performing songs like “Love Letters,” “Just For The Night,” and “Joy Ride,” Hueston quickly won over the crowd. Earlier in the day, he toured the USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77), meeting Sailors and learning more about their daily life at sea.

“I’m so thankful that I was able to play for the men, women and families of the U.S. Navy,” Hueston said. “I also got to tour the USS Bush earlier in the day, standing on that ship hits different. I’m grateful for everyone who serves and everyone who showed up. An honor, truly.”

Next up, Gwen Stefani took the stage as the special guest performer, captivating the audience with her signature charisma and genre-spanning hits. The multi-platinum artist and Grammy Award winner brought an energy that radiated across the pier, performing “Hey Baby,” “It’s My Life,” and “Underneath It All,” keeping fans on their feet from start to finish. Her set blended nostalgia and new material, creating a high-energy performance that felt both personal and electric.

“Being here today has been breathtaking,” Gwen Stefani said. “Just seeing the ships and meeting the Sailors…it’s hard to put into words. I feel so honored to be here and so grateful for the people who choose to serve. Music really brings people together, and we all need that right now.”

As the night continued, the energy reached its peak when Jelly Roll closed the show as the headliner. The multi-platinum recording artist and Grammy nominee, celebrated for his honesty and emotional storytelling, delivered a deeply moving performance of songs spanning his current hits and early discography. Known for his chart-topping hits and cross-genre success, he brought both power and authenticity to the stage, connecting with the audience through stories of redemption, resilience and hope. Between songs, he spoke about faith, perseverance and the importance of community, drawing cheers and applause from the thousands gathered along the waterfront.

“I truly believe the bravest people in the world are right here,” Jelly Roll said. “Because of the sacrifices they make, service members and their families don’t always get to experience the entertainment they deserve. I hope tonight reminds them they’re not alone and gives them a memory they can look back on years from now.”

Operation MWR is more than a concert series; it’s a reminder of the Navy’s commitment to supporting Sailors and their families through meaningful, morale-boosting experiences. The success of Norfolk’s event highlighted Navy leadership’s dedication to improving quality of life and strengthening community connections.

“Operation MWR is a huge morale boost for our Sailors and their families,” said Capt. Matt Schlarmann, Commanding Officer of NS Norfolk. “It allows them an opportunity to see top-line talent for free, and it lets us give something back. In the Navy, it’s easy to get caught up in your job and your daily routine. This gives people a chance to just relax, enjoy the night and spend time with their families in a safe environment. It also shows how big the Navy community really is and how much support is out there. They’re not alone, there are thousands of others who share the same experiences and challenges, and events like this help bring everyone together.”

As part of Navy MWR’s ongoing efforts to enhance Quality of Service, these concerts are designed to inspire resilience, readiness and camaraderie across the Navy community. This year’s Operation MWR series also serves as a centerpiece of the Navy and Nation’s 250th birthday celebration, a two-year tribute honoring 250 years of defending freedom and ensuring peace through strength.
