Naval Support Activity Annapolis Celebrates with Operation MWR Despite Rain

May 29, 2024 | Story by Megan Trexler | Commander, Navy Installations Command

Rain did little to deter the enthusiasm at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Annapolis on May 4, as Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Entertainment brought together service members and their families for an evening of music and camaraderie. The event featured headliner Switchfoot, known for their dynamic rock anthems and thought-provoking lyrics and Baltimore’s own Kelly Bell Band, whose blend of soul, blues, reggae and funk provided a captivating start to the festivities. Both bands showcased their distinct musical styles, adding to the event's vibrant atmosphere.

Operation MWR is pivotal in boosting the morale and resilience of Navy personnel. "Work-life balance supports healthy lifestyle behaviors in our Sailors and their families, essential for any installation’s ability to meet its mission," states Capt. Christopher Schwarz, Commanding Officer at NSA Annapolis. He further adds, "Operation MWR provides a fantastic opportunity for our sailors and their families to enjoy some well-deserved recreation."

The impact of such events is significant, according to Schwarz. "Strong teams that feel invested in their mission and in one another are a clear indicator of successful events like these," he explains. This sense of community is vital for NSA Annapolis, enhancing its mission to support and nurture the Navy’s future leaders.

Captain Schwarz emphasizes the importance of these events in fostering a sense of connectedness and support within the NSA Annapolis community. "Our aim with MWR and other similar initiatives is to ensure that our team feels a part of a supportive and resilient community. It’s about more than just fun; it’s about building a foundation for enduring success," he concludes.

The Operation MWR event is just one of many efforts to bolster the spirits and welfare of those who serve, ensuring that even on rainy days, the spirit of community shines brightly.
