USS Gerald R. Ford Rocks to the Beats of Free Daps and Street Drum Corps

WASHINGTON – Entertainment groups Free Daps and Street Drum Corps performed aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and Naval Air Station Sigonella for over 1,800 Sailors on August 18-19, 2023. The live event was hosted by Commander, Navy Installations Command’s (CNIC), Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR)’s Navy Entertainment Program in partnership with MWR’s Deployed Forces Support.
“We’ve done a couple of carriers and the morale here, the energy here, has been the best that I’ve ever seen,” expressed Isaac Knox, a member of Free Daps.
Free Daps, the freestyle rappers, captivated the audience with lightning-fast, improvised rap battles with real-time involvement from the audience. Laughter filled the air as they seamlessly delivered a continuous flow of clever punchlines. With years of experience, Free Daps has toured extensively, offering unique shows that effortlessly merge hip-hop and comedy. Their skills and track record as rappers and improvisers have cultivated a loyal fan base across North America.
MWR and Navy Entertainment events provide Sailors a way to decompress and spend time laughing with their shipmates. An integral part of Navy MWR’s mission is offering recreational and morale boosting events for the fleet and family.
“None of this would have been possible without the crew here onboard and MWR’s help,” said Bobby Alt, a member of Street Drum Corps. “We’re sad to leave. There were a lot of people in the crowd who showed their passion for music and I’m happy we were able to show our appreciation for everything our service members are doing out here.”
Formed in 2004, Street Drum Corps is a dynamic punk rock band known for their high-energy drum and percussion shows. Founded by Bobby Alt, Adam Alt and Frank Zummo, their unique vision has led to global recognition. The band has appeared on America’s Got Talent and won MTV’s “Amazingness.”
